2021/22 CONCERT SEASON
December 12, 2021: The Fair Trade Trio presented the third concert in their new “in Focus” virtual concert series, featuring a work written in 2016 by American composer Anthony R. Green. Collide-oscope II is the second in a set of pieces that explore concentrated colors, concentrated pitch collections, and restrained employment, in order to create a texture that spins and collides much like the colors and shards of material found in a kaleidoscope. November 7, 2021: The Fair Trade Trio presented the second concert in their new “In Focus” virtual concert series, featuring a work written in 2016 by composer Brittany J. Green. Intersections is a concept piece written for open instrumentation and is representative of the finite yet infinite nature of moments where paths are crossed. The piece has no set beginning or ending, just a cycle of intersected lines to be interpreted at the performers’ will. To watch the concert, please click here.
October 17, 2021: The Fair Trade Trio presented the first concert in their new “In Focus” virtual concert series, featuring a work written in 2017 by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Spectra creates evocative imagery through the use of textures and sound. It is comprised of six individual movements which are played without pause so that the distinct movements are only apparent through the changing imagery and mood. May 22, 2022: For our 2021-22 season finale, and first in-person concert in two years, the Fair Trade Trio was joined by the exquisite pianist Alexandra Joan in Dvorak’s Piano Quartet No. 2 alongside two works by brilliant young composers, Brittany J. Green and Anthony R. Green.

July 2, 2021: The Fair Trade Trio was featured on Sing for Hope’s new streaming platform, OpenArts. The program included Jessica Meyer’s I Only Speak of the Sun, Emily Doolittle’s Field Guide, and highlights from Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 1 in G Major.

February 21, 2021: The Fair Trade Trio was honored to be named the Music for Autism’s 2020 Spotlight Artist. While we truly missed seeing our regular Music for Autism audiences in person this year (nothing can beat the special energy at these concerts!), we were thrilled to present a streaming concert to Music for Autism’s national audience during which we received a special trophy in recognition of our award.
December 6, 2020: Fair Trade At Home. This virtual program included Jessica Meyer’s I Only Speak of the Sun as well as two movements of Faure’s first piano quartet. Also on the program were solo works performed by members of the Trio and guest pianist Taisiya Pushkar. At Home with Fair Trade was made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by LMCC. LMCC serves, connects, and makes space for artists and community.
2019/20 CONCERT SEASON
The remainder of our 2019/20 season was postponed/canceled due to the Covid19 pandemic. We look forward to returning to the concert hall when it is again safe to do so!
February 23rd, 2020: The Fair Trade Trio was joined by pianist Taisiya Pushkar for a community concert as part of the MOSA concert series. The program began with Jessica Meyer’s I Only Speak of the Sun, which was inspired by Rumi’s Ode by the same title while exploring the palette of colors the string trio can produce, followed by Schnittke’s searing String Trio, and the deeply emotional yet restrained lyricism of Fauré’s first piano quartet.
January 26, 2020: The Fair Trade Trio performed at SAJ. The varied program included New Zealand composer Natalie Hunt’s Clarinet Quartet featuring guest clarinetist, Bixby Kennedy.
November 10th, 2019: The Fair Trade Trio performed for Music for Autism at the Third Street Music School Settlement. We were thrilled to see some familiar faces, and plenty of new ones! Missy Mazzoli’s piece, Lies You Can Believe In, set the tone of excitement with familiar images of life in the big city and of course we ended with upbeat dance music to get everyone up and dancing!
2018/19 CONCERT SEASON
May 19th, 2019 at 7pm: The Fair Trade Trio and pianist Taisiya Pushkar performed Schumann’s Piano Quartet and the trio gave the world premiere of Alon Nechushtan‘s Fractured Fairy Tales.
May 18th and January 13, 2019: The Fair Trade Trio danced, swayed, and improvised with the high-energy Music for Autism audience during a performance which featured selections from Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 1 and, for story time, Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s The Ogre Lover.
May 9, April 11, and February 14th, 2019: The Trio was in residency at the Corona Youth Music Program’s after-school beginner violin class at PS 110Q. The Trio explored basic violin techniques and musical concepts through games and story telling.
May 6, 2019, Smith College: The Fair Trade Trio presented the completed works for string trio by the student composers at Smith College as a culmination of its work together during the spring semester residency.
March 1, 2019, Smith College: The Fair Trade Trio traveled to Smith College to present works by living female composers including Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s “The Ogre Lover,” based on a poem by Ted Hughes about Smith College graduate Sylvia Plath.
February 13th, 2019: Early morning concerts (by musicians’ standards, anyways) always have a special kind of energy and we loved pouring ourselves into Schumann’s Piano Quartet first thing in the morning at Horace Mann during Music Week.
January 27th, 2019 at 7pm – We always love performing at the SAJ and this year was no different. We were joined by oboist Jason Smoller for Britten’s “Phantasy” Quartet. We also performed Missy Mazzoli’s “Lies You Can Believe In,” Krasa’s Passacaglia and Fugue (in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day), and Beethoven’s Op. 9 No. 1 in G Major.
January 13th, 2019 at 2pm – The Fair Trade Trio danced, swayed, and improvised with the high-energy Music for Autism audience during a performance which featured selections from Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 1 and, for story time, Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s “The Ogre Lover.”
January 10th, 2019 at 4:30pm – The Fair Trade Trio returned to the Corona Youth Music Project where it presented a concert featuring works by Beethoven, Saariaho, Krása, and Mazzoli. After the concert, the Trio was treated to a performance of Gershwin’s Lullaby by the advanced string students and workshopped with them to shape their musical approach in new ways.
November 30th, 2018 at 7:30pm – The Fair Trade Trio joined forces with Wet Electric at the new music venue MISE-EN_PLACE for an “electrifying” night of new music including Jennifer Higdon’s String Trio, Missy Mazzoli’s “Lies You Can Believe In,” and Kaija Saariaho’s “Cloud” Trio.
September 17th, 2018 at 7:30pm – We were honored to perform at the intimate Areté Gallery alongside several of our closest friends and performers we admire – all playing music by prominent female composers – in the Feminist Wonder Concert: Music by women performed by women!
2017/18 CONCERT SEASON
May 11, May 24, and June 8, 2018 at 2:30pm – The Trio was in residency at the Corona Youth Music Program‘s after school violin class at Casa 311. We had such a great time working with these enthusiastic and curious young musicians through our three interactive programs.
June 3, 2018 at 11am – This time we traveled to the Bronx, specifically the Bronx House School for Performing Arts, for another fun, high energy, and interactive Music for Autism program.
May 6, 2018 at 3pm – We celebrated our third season finale at the lovely and intimate David Greer Recital Hall with pianist Taisiya Pushkar performing Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor. We also presented Spring-themed pieces: Kaija Saariaho’s “Cloud” Trio, which draws on different types of clouds as inspiration, and Emily Doolittle’s “Field Guide,” which is based on three birds found in North America.
April 21, 2018 at 1pm – Music for Autism concerts are always such fun and this one at the Park Slope Library was no exception! We danced to Oliveros, conducted Mozart, and capped it off with a percussion instrument jam session!
March 6, 2018 at 7pm – Our second Rush Hour concert at The Artist Co-op featured Kaija Saariaho’s 2009 composition, “Cloud Trio,” which draws on different types of clouds as inspiration, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s captivating Divertimento.
February 14, 2018 at 9:15am – We started our Valentine’s Day bright and early with Mozart’s G minor Piano Quartet at the Horace Mann School for Music Week. No better way to spend the most romantic day of the year than playing great music with our favorite colleagues for tomorrow’s leaders.
January 21, 2018 at 7pm – We were thrilled to be back at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism where we presented the soulful String Trio of Mieczysław Weinberg, and “Brief Memories” by prominent Israeli composer Gilad Hochman, the US premiere of Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s “The Ogre Lover,” inspired by the Ted Hughes poem “Fairytale,” and the masterful “Andante” movement from Mozart’s Divertimento.
October 18th, 2017 at 7pm – Our very first Rush Hour concert at The Artist Co-op with wine, cheese, and works by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We will also feature the NY premieres of works by Emily Doolittle and Gilad Hochman.
August 24, 2017 at 2pm – We performed a free and family-friendly sneak peek of our upcoming season at incredible volunteer-run Word Up Community Bookshop/Libreria Comunitaria
2016/17 CONCERT SEASON
Pacific Northwest Tour 2017
- July 26, 2017 – We closed our tour at the Old Church Concert Hall on their Sack Lunch Concert Series. We began with Dohnanyi’s Serenade and Emily Doolittle’s Field guide which was especially exciting since the Western Meadowlark (mvt 3) is the state bird of Oregon! Finally, we closed our concert – and our tour – with a final performance of Beethoven’s Op. 9 No. 3.
- July 25, 2017 – We were up early again for our concert at the KidsQuest museum. We had a large group of children waiting excitedly for us, including some repeat audience members from our concert the day before! We presented excerpts from Dohnanyi’s Serenade, Emily Doolittle’s “Field Guide,” Vivaldi’s “Spring,” Beethoven’s Op. 9 No. 3, Pauline Oliveros’ “Thirteen Changes” (complete with Ashley joining the kids in some very interpretive body movements and sounds to complement the improvisations of Hannah and Jeanette), and ended with a surprise from the movie Moana to get everyone up and dancing.
- July 23, 2017 – We had the opportunity to perform in the new Resonance at SOMA Towers in Bellevue, Washington and really enjoyed the experience of this intimate chamber music venue! The first half of the program was trio only – Beethoven’s Op. 9 No. 3 and Emily Doolittle’s “Field Guide.” Then we were joined by Li-Tan for Brahms’ First Piano Quartet. Li-Tan has more notes in her score than the entire trio parts put together and she played each one masterfully. We’re so grateful to her for collaborating with us.
- July 21, 2017 – We opened our concert at the Oak Bay Music Series’ Summer Serenade with, fittingly, Dohnanyi’s “Serenade” and Emily Doolittle’s “Field Guide.” We loved hearing the audience react to Emily’s piece, especially to the unexpected end of Mvt 2, “Sage Grouse!” (No spoilers!) After a brief intermission, we opened the second half of the program with Molly Herron’s “Nelson” and finished with Beethoven’s Op. 9, No. 3.
- July 20, 2017 – We love performing at the Silk Purse Arts Centre – they open the windows and we can feel the sea breeze as we perform. We started our performance with Dohnanyi’s “Serenade” and then it was time for the world premiere of Emily Doolittle’s “Field Guide,” a piece we commissioned for this tour. Emily’s piece uses the bird songs of three birds: the Horned Lark, the Sage Grouse, and the Western Meadowlark. We closed our performance with Beethoven’s Op. 9, No. 3.
May 25, 2017 – We kicked off our Memorial Day weekend with pianist Taisiya Pushkar as we celebrated the end of our second season with a concert featuring local composer Molly Herron‘s “Nelson,” Ernő Dohnanyi’s “Serenade” for String Trio, and Johannes Brahms’ incredible First Piano Quartet.
May 21, 2017 – The Fair Trade Trio was honored to perform a high energy sensory-friendly performance for Music for Autism. We had such fun meeting our eager audience members and it was one of the best audience participation programs we’ve ever experienced!
March 1, 2017 – The Fair Trade Trio was be joined by oboist Jason Smoller for an evening of chamber music in the beautiful SAJ sanctuary. Repertoire included Francaix’s Quartet for English Horn and Trio, Dohnányi’s “Serenade” for String Trio, and Beethoven’s Op. 9 No. 3.
February 15, 2017 – The Fair Trade Trio joined pianist Taisiya Pushkar in a performance of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor at the Horace Mann School during their annual Music Week.
October 16, 2016 – The Fair Trade Trio was featured in the opening concert of MOSA’s 15th season will feature the Fair Trade Trio in Beethoven’s dramatic String Trio in C minor, Jennifer Higdon’s String Trio in celebration of the completion of their first recording of her piece, and Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G minor with pianist Taisiya Pushkar. *Sponsored by Michael Lord & Co.

April 15, 2016 – The Fair Trade Trio presented two 30 minutes performances at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.
February 25, 2016 – The Fair Trade Trio performed an interactive presentation of Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 2 at the Corona Youth Music Project. The young students were amazingly attentive and active participants!
February 21, 2016 – The Fair Trade Trio was joined by oboist Jason Smoller in a performance of Mozart’s Quartet for Oboe and Strings. We also presented Jean Sibelius’ String Trio in G Minor, Zoltán Kodály’s Intermezzo, Canadian composer Murray Adaskin’s Divertimento No. 9, and Gideon Klein’s final composition, String Trio, written just before being deported to Auschwitz from the Terezín concentration camp.
February 18, 2016 – The Fair Trade Trio and guest oboist Jason Smoller performed a Groupmuse concert in Brooklyn as a special preview to our concert at the SAJ.
November 20, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio presented their official 2015/2016 season opening concert at the National Opera Center’s Rehearsal Hall. We performed Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 2, Jennifer Higdon’s gorgeous and challenging String Trio, and Gideon Klein’s final composition, String Trio, written just before being deported to Auschwitz from the Terezín concentration camp.
November 19, 2015 – Jeanette and Ashley were joined by special guest Celia Hatton for a performance of Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 2 at the WHIN Music Project, an El-Sistema based program that provides music instruction as a vehicle for personal & social development for underserved children & youth. The concert was free and open to the public and Ashley’s one-year-old son even manage to sit quietly through the performance! After the performance, the trio stayed to help out with the young orchestra’s sectional rehearsal in preparation for their upcoming performance.
November 18, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio headed to Brooklyn for a Groupmuse concert. Groupmuse is a fun and informal way for us to preview repertoire for our upcoming concert and we absolutely love performing chamber music in such an intimate and casual setting. We get to chat and laugh with our audience before, throughout, and after the performance. Plus we get to drink a bit! We presented Haydn’s Divertimento No. 6, Hob. IX, Gideon Klein’s String Trio, and Jennifer Higdon’s String Trio. We had two solo performances as well; Jeanette performed the prelude to the Suite in D Minor by J.S. Bach and Kallie performed the increasingly popular piece, “For One” by Mariel Berger.
November 13, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio was thrilled to be invited back to the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts for two performances. We started the day with a performance of Gideon Klein’s last composition, String Trio, full of rich folk melodies and written under unbelievable circumstances in the Terezín concentration camp. For our second performance that morning, we presented Jennifer Higdon’s String Trio and we loved hearing how enthusiastically these musical high-school students received her work.
Pacific Northwest Tour 2015
- July 20, 2015 – The KidsQuest museum in Bellevue was the perfect lighthearted way to end our five day tour. We had a large group of energetic children and their parents gathered in the classroom inside the museum by 2pm, and we danced, clapped, pointed, and made musical pizza together as we explored Beethoven’s Op. 9, No. 2. We finished with everyone up and dancing during the fourth movement finale! Maybe every trio tour should end with a dance party! Thanks to Alison Luk and everyone at the KidsQuest museum for the opportunity to perform!
- July 19, 2015 – We were thrilled to collaborate with the new ensemble, Sound of Late, who hosted us in a house concert at the Pink Palace, in Portland, OR on day 4 of our tour. Bryce, violinist with Sound of Late, performed a piece by Nayla Mehdi, and then Kallie, violist with Fair Trade, performed a sneak peek from her upcoming solo tour, and then we performed “Thirteen Changes” with both Bryce and Andrew from Sound of Late. Then it was the trio’s turn to take over and we performed two movements from Villa-Lobos’ String Trio, Adaskin’s Divertimento No. 9, and Higdon’s String Trio. Thanks to Bryce Caster and Andrew Stiefel, everyone at Sound of Late, and the Pink Palace residents, for collaborating with us and hosting us in Portland!
- July 18, 2015 – Day 3 of our tour found us at the Puget Sound Yacht Club, hosted by the Seattle Newcomer’s group. We performed Beethoven’s Op. 9, No, 2, Adaskin’s Divertimento No. 9, Villa-Lobos’ String Trio, and Kodaly’s Intermezzo. Thanks to Brian and Victoria Windle for coordinating this Seattle Newcomer’s Soundbites event at the Puget Sound Yacht Club!
- July 17, 2015 – On day 2 of our tour, we headed to Victoria, B.C. to perform at St. Mary the Virgin, one of the venues for the Oak Bay Music Society. We performed Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 2 and Higdon’s String Trio, took an intermission (this was the only concert of the tour that was long enough for an intermission), then performed Adaskin’s Divertimento No. 9 and Villa-Lobos’ String Trio. After several bows and a standing ovation, we were excited to share the Kodaly Intermezzo with our audience. Thanks to Erik Abbink and Oak Bay Music for the opportunity to perform, and to Deryk Barker of Three’s Company for the concert review.
- July 16, 2015 – Our first concert of our 2015 West Coast tour was at the Silk Purse Arts Centre, the home of the West Vancouver Arts Council. We performed Murray Adaskin’s Divertimento No. 9, Zoltan Kodaly’s Intermezzo, Jennifer Higdon’s String Trio, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9, No. 2. We loved meeting our audience over cookies and coffee afterwards. Thanks to Loren Spagnulo and the West Vancouver Arts Council for the opportunity to perform at the Silk Purse Arts Centre!
June 17, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio performed at the Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls. We presented our Beethoven String Trio Op. 9, No. 2 in D Major one hour interactive performance including a question-and-answer session. Jeanette used to teach at BGLIG and Kallie has taught several of the students as well so we were very warmly welcomed. We enjoyed having such a musically sophisticated young audience!
June 11, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio performed at their first Groupmuse, in Brooklyn, NY. We performed Beethoven’s String Trio, Opus 9, No. 2, Kodaly’s Intermezzo, and the 2nd mvt of the Villa-Lobos String Trio. We appreciated our enthusiastic audience, gracious host, amazing Brooklyn loft apartment, and a great selection of drinks! Oh, and a film crew from PBS filming the event for a news feature on Groupmuse. We can’t wait to share the video when it airs! We especially loved the laid-back atmosphere before, during, and after the concert, and the opportunity to make friends with the other guests. We’ll definitely be playing more Groupmuse concerts in the future. Chamber music is, after all, mostly meant to be played in homes, not concert halls!
March 13, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio was excited to perform at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts! We presented two 30-minute performances of Beethoven’s String Trio, Opus 9, No. 2 in D Major plus a question-and-answer session with the students afterwards. We couldn’t have asked for a more attentive and astute audience! A photo from our performance can be found here.
January 29th, 2015 – The Fair Trade Trio performed Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 No. 2 in D Major in an interactive presentation for students in the Corona Youth Music Project at the Immigrant Movement International. Ashley worked with CYMP, an El Sistema-inspired music program, as a volunteer teacher in the past and both Jeanette and Kallie have worked for El Sistema-inspired organizations so this was a perfect inaugural performance opportunity!
